As the global population continues to increase, the demand for sustainable and reliable energy sources has become increasingly critical. Alongside rising energy demand, concerns regarding the environmental impact of energy production have also intensified. Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) utilizing supercritical CO? as the working fluid, commonly referred to as CO?-based EGS, have been proposed as a promising approach to enhance geothermal energy production while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions. This study investigates the long-term production behavior of a CO?-based EGS using reservoir characteristics from the Qiabuqia geothermal field. A numerical simulation model was developed for a system consisting of two production wells and one injection well connected through hydraulic fractures. The analysis focuses on the sustainability of heat extraction and the evolution of reservoir thermal performance over time. In addition, a flow assurance study was conducted to investigate corrosion and other aspects of pipeline flow problems. An economic feasibility study was also conducted to assess the commercial viability of the geothermal project. The results indicate that the proposed CO?-based EGS system is capable of sustaining long-term operation over a 30-year project lifetime, demonstrating its potential as a reliable geothermal energy system integrated with carbon sequestration. Higher CO? circulation rates improve both energy generation and CO? storage performance, with the 80 kg/s circulation rate achieving the highest production of 534.21 GWh? of electricity and 2,982.46 GWh?? of thermal energy during 30 years of operation. The flow assurance analysis result indicates extreme corrosion, reaching up to 22.7 mm/year of corrosion rate during the projectβs mid-life. Under the carbon credit economic condition, the highest obtained NPV is 2.77 MMUSD at a CO? circulation rate of 80 kg/s. Meanwhile, the carbon credit with favorable market conditions scenario results in substantially improved economic performance, with the highest NPV reaching 16.16 MMUSD at the same circulation rate. In contrast, the no carbon credit scenario yields negative NPVs for all evaluated circulation rates. Overall, the findings demonstrate the potential of CO?-based EGS as a sustainable geothermal technology capable of simultaneously supporting renewable energy generation and long-term CO? storage in fractured reservoir systems.
NATURAL STATE MODELLING OF RANTAU DEDAP FIELD USING TNAVIGATOR
Indonesia is one of the most promising regions for geothermal energy development. Harnessing this potential requires a thorough understanding of the geothermal systems, which can be achieved through comprehensive natural state modelling. Rantau Dedap geothermal field is located in Lahat and Muara Enim Regency, about 200 km SW of Palembang City, and has reached Phase 1 commercial operation with capacity of 91.2 MW on late 2021. This study aims to create the natural state modelling of the reservoir by utilizing data obtained from published studies. The simulation modelling was conducted using tNavigator software. The natural state modelling result is matched in general as its temperature and heat flow align with the observed data, though there may still need more adjustment for further improvement. Using parameters from simulation result and literature review, the field's potential resource was estimated using the volumetric method combined with Monte Carlo probabilistic simulation and, the calculated reserves are 23.7 MWe in P10, 72.7 MWe in P50, and 146.3 MWe in P90.
