Temperature and fluid concentration are key factors influencing the performance of fracturing fluids, not only in terms of rheological properties but also in permeability changes caused by polymer residues remaining in porous media. This study utilizes a microfluidic model with a heterogeneous permeability chip to visualize fluid flow characteristics and residue distribution at the pore scale using CMHPG as the base fluid. Experimental results show that increasing temperature accelerates viscosity degradation, while higher polymer concentration improves fluid stability against early degradation. The addition of the breaker ammonium persulfate (APS) accelerates polymer chain scission, where the degradation effect becomes more significant at higher temperatures and lower polymer concentrations. A comparison between viscosity measurements from rheometer testing and microfluidic injection indicates the influence of pore-scale flow phenomena such as permeability heterogeneity, extensional flow, and permeability changes during injection due to polymer residue retention. The generated residue ranges from 73–81% and increases to 80–85% with breaker addition, indicating a potential formation damage effect. Furthermore, the interaction between temperature, concentration, and breaker also affects the initial viscosity behavior and the subsequent degradation process during injection. Overall, the microfluidic method demonstrates strong potential as a more effective and efficient experimental approach to represent fracturing fluid injection under reservoir-like conditions and to evaluate the relationship between viscosity degradation, residue formation, and permeability changes at the pore scale.
